Chapter Five

T here was a light spring in my step, and a million-dollar smile on my face, as I knocked on Karen’s bedroom door in the morning and waited for a response.

After knocking a few more times, and waiting for 10 minutes, I decided to try the door handle, and to my surprise, the door was locked, and Karen’s room was bathed in darkness.

As I stumbled across her room, feeling my way and stumbling on empty bottles of whiskey, I finally managed to find the button that opened the drapes in Karen’s room, and pressed them to finally allow the rays of the morning sun to flood into the darkness in which Karen was sleeping.

“Karen? KAREN?!”I almost shouted, and Karen stirred in sleep.

“Close the curtains,” mumbled the millionaire, but I was in no mood to listen to her.

“How many bottles of whiskey did you finish in the night? I thought you were going to sleep?”

“I didn’t finish all of these yesterday night. This is a few night’s work. What can I say, I like my alcohol.”

“Well, I am sure you do. But guess what, staying alive is much better than drinking alcohol. Didn’t anyone ever try and stop you?” I asked, sitting beside Karen o her bed, while she propped herself up on her elbows.

I looked at Karen’s face, glowing in the rays of the morning sun, and I wondered how someone could look this beautiful just when they had woken up.

But then again, I had asked myself this question every time I had ever woken up beside Karen years ago. Every morning, I would open my eyes, and see this angel sleeping beside me, and I would spoon her from behind, and look onto her face, and have my breath taken away.

“No one ever asked me to stop drinking. But then again, why would they? I tend to splurge on my friends when I am drunk, so I guess they keep me drunk in order to be the beneficiaries of the aforementioned splurging,” said Karen, and yawned.

“That is so depressing. Anyways, I don’t want to start the day with depressing things, because I have great news for you.”

“What?”

“I spoke to the Ambassador early in the morning about your little situation, and guess what, Sheikh Riyadh’s daughter has just applied to Harvard for a business course, and to get in, Sheikh Riyadh has asked the ambassador for special favors, if you know what I mean. So, I asked the Ambassador if he would like to leverage this and help you with regards to your problem,” I said, and took a dramatic pause.

“And?”

“And, he said why would he let a fucking French company outdo a home-grown American company. And so, he put me on hold, made another call to Sheikh Riyadh, and guess what, you have the retail space back!”

I was not ready for Karen did next, but I definitely enjoyed it a lot. She lunged towards me, enveloped me in a bear hug, and then kissed me right on my lips.
